Friends In Life and Death

Friends In Life And Death

ਸੁਖ ਮੈ ਬਹੁ ਸੰਗੀ ਭਏ ਦੁਖ ਮੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
sukh mai bahu sa(n)gee bheae dhukh mai sa(n)g n koe

In good times, there are many companions around, but in bad times, there is no one at all.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਭਜੁ ਮਨਾ ਅੰਤਿ ਸਹਾਈ ਹੋਇ ॥32॥
kahu naanak har bhaj manaa a(n)th sehaaee hoe 32

Says Nanak, vibrate, and meditate on the Lord; He shall be your only Help and Support in the end. 32

This Shabad is by Guru Tegh Bahaadur Ji in Salok Mehl 9 on Anng 1428

In happiness and prosperity one finds her many friends; In sorrow and adversity there is none, Says Nanak, leaving Communion was gone, my mind,The Lord will save thee in the end.

Plato once stated, "that friendship arises out of human needs and wants and the higher form of ideal of friendship exists only for the sake of God." Selfish and greedy people become the most flattering friends of prosperous, successful, powerful and rich people, but as soon as they face adversity, they not only disappear be even turn against him/her. True friendship is inspired by wisdom, pyar, selflessness and virtue. These are acquired by leading a contemplative life.

Shakespeare states, "All friends shall taste, the wages of their virtues and all foes, the cup of their deservings."

True friendship is a divine gift, which exalts character, ennobles and purifies man's heart and soul and fills it with compassion and understanding. God, and those who live in the love of the truth, are the only true friends of Man and destined but stand by him and redeem him from the sorrow and tribulations of life and death.

Parents are the foundation to any family, without them one is unable to become nurtured and disciplined. Your Mother is your Lord (2nd to God), all her blessings and wishes come true, she is superior and inline with the Lord. Your father come 2nd in your family but is still impartial.

Some of us are blessed into a good, caring loving family, while others are not so fortunate, due to actions from your last life. Guru Ji put us in certain family for a reason as they don’t make mistakes. It is a test of spirituality. It is to test how you deal with attachment as well as many other things.

Family and worldly affairs are an ocean of fire. Through doubt, emotional attachment and ignorance, we are enveloped in darkness. (SGGSJ 675 ). He alone is a householder, who restrains his passions and begsfor meditation, austerity and self-discipline (SGGSJ 952).

Dhann daaraa sanpat gareh kish. Kish sang na chaalai samajh leh. Ik bhagti Naaraayan hoi sang. Kahu Nanak bhaj tih ek rang: Wealth, spouse, property and household - none of them will go along with you; you must know that this is true! Only devotion to God will go with you. Says Nanak, meditate on God with single-minded love (SGGSJ 1187).

The Mind's Best Friend

Once told by Baba JI (Bhai Sahib Bhai Mohinder Singh Ji) when I was confused as ever, (as you can see from my photo) is that your mind is what can take you toward heaven or hell. They gave me very good advice. They said that your mind should be your best friend to achieve a place in heaven.
Not only that but when you are best friends with your mind it helps you to conquer the 5 evils of anger, lust, greed, attachment, and false pride. Not saying that I have conquered this, as it is very very difficult, but im trying. Not being friends with your minds is like making your mind a devils workshop as you are constantly fighting.
There are 8 VIRTUES TO COMBAT THE 5 EVILS, these are
  • Wisdom (gyan) : is the complete knowledge of a set of religious principles. It can be achieved by hearing good, thinking good and doing good. A man of wisdom tries to achieve a high moral standard in his life and interaction with others. According to Sikhism, the first steps to wisdom is to consider oneself as an ignorant person who has to learn a lot in life.
  • Truthful Living (sat) : This is more than 'truth'. It means living according to the way of God i.e. the thoughts should match the words that a person speaks and his actions should also match his words. Truthful living brings a person closer to God.
  • Justice (niaon) : means freedom and equal opportunities for all. Respect for the rights of others and strict absence of attempts to exploit a fellowbeing. Sikhism forbids the desire to loot another's property. It also strictly instructs the Sikhs to show respect even for the women and children of an enemy.
  • Temperance (santokh) : means self control which has to be developed through meditation and prayers. A Sikh has to banish evil thoughts from his mind by constantly repeating Gods name and reciting prayers. Torture to the body to develop self-control is not advocated in Sikhism.
  • Patience (dhiraj) : implies a high level of tolerance and empathy for others. It requires control over ones ego and willingness to overlook another's weakness or mistakes. It requires that a Sikh should be strongwilled, but kind hearted.
  • Courage (himmat) : means bravery i.e. absence of fear. It is the ability to stake ones life for ones convictions and for saving others from injustice or cruelty.
  • Humility (namarta) : is a deliberate denial of pleasure at one's own praise and admiration. It means underplaying ones own strengths and respecting the abilities of others. It is the antidote to 'ahankar'
  • Contentment (sabar) : means refraining from worldly fears and submitting oneself to the will of God. The typical worldly fears can be fear of death, poverty, disrespect and defeat. It is this virtue that has given the Sikhs the moral strength to withstand the various atrocities committed on their community in the last three centuries.

Tunisia July 2005

For my 21st birthday back in July, my mum and dad sent me to Tunisia with these clowns, LOL, was one of the best holidays I had, nice hotel, good weather, and um nice blue sea.

The people living in Tunisia never had a clue wat I was, half them didn't even know about sikhi. I was a bit shocked, as I went with a Hindu and a muslim, when we met people they was asking each of us what we were. When ever it came to me they was like what's that, wat do you believe in?, after explaing for about 30 minutes they was shocked to hear about Sikhism and how hard it is to follow, I got a lot of respect out there, some was even scared to see a young boy with a beard, as when they usually see young boys with beards they assume there priest or something. This guy came up to me in the hotel and asked to take a picture with him, he was the hotel photographer and wanted this personally. (hope he hasn't done anything with it, pervs, LOL). the people out there was really friendly, was a amazing holiday, bare gash.

Our hotel was right next to the beach, so at night we use to go these bars, there was a wicked Jamaican bar, after a while I was high on coke so I decided to play with the sand. :)

LOL, oh man looking at this picture makes me laugh, these was some powerful buggies, LOL. Me and my other mates was racing, I cut him up and he drove into a deep ditch, it was so funny, we all had to stop and check if he was alright, LOL, was soooo sooo Fanny, I mean funny.

Barcelona Interfaith 2004

Thanks to Guru Nanak Niskam Sewak Jatha GNNSJ, we was blessed to be part of a massive interfaith program in Barcelona in 2004. This event was truly amazing, it was one of the best experiences I ever had as a Sikh. This was the 4th Parliament of the world religions event. This important and unique opportunity was to demonstrate to the world how the Sikh faith exemplifies universal interfaith principles.

The event took place right next to a beach, so when ever we had a bit of time off, we relaxed out on the beach (it was a naked beach, I don't think, ehehe, I think that was a few miles up, so I was told, Jatlee and Harnam mentioned) left to right, sister :Pindi, me: Jas, sister number 2 :Nicky, brother in law: Diwan and bro : Randy. all chilling on the rocks

My b day was on the 5th July, so we went out to sum restaurant, nicky wanted to play wid my dharii in the photo, damm man, I spent ages spraying it, its turned brown.

These are sum of the niggas, starting from the left its Mani (Manroop), Fanypreet (Manpreet), Big Jas also known as Jeff (Jaspal), Jutlee (Jatinder), Peter (Pritpal), Me (jaspal) Indy (Inderjeet), Gaz (Gagan) and Dealer. we had to do security at night, we also had wicked games of football.

One of the most best experiences in Barcelona was seeing people join you doing sewa. There was all kinds of people doing sewa, any colour and creed and caste was all joined together serving Guru Ka Langar, everyone was served Guru Jis Langar, and no-one should leave hungry, these was the word of Baba Ji. There was thousands of people coming to the langar hall all day and it was truly amazing to see soo many people join in the sewa. I was soo glad I went to Barcelona as anyone who also went will say the same, we was all blessed with the chance to join in this sewa and interfaith event.

Golden Temple

Originally during 1574, the site of the temple was surrounded by a small lake, in a thin forest. The lake was enlarged and a small township was established during the leadership of the fourth Sikh Guru (Guru Ram Das, 1574-1581). It was during the leadership of the fifth Guru (Guru Arjan, 1581-1606), that full fledged Temple was built. The land on which it was built was gifted to Guru Ram Das by the Mughal emperor Akbar. A Muslim saint Hazrat Mian Mir of Lahore in December 1588 initiated the construction of the building by laying the foundation stone. It was completed in 1601. The temple was later attacked and had to be substantially rebuilt in the 1760s.

Amritsar is one of the most ancient and legendary sites in the Punjab. The origin of the place where the Sri Hari Mandir stands is shrouded in mystery. Some trace its origin to the pre-historic, Vedic-epic period as a place of considerable religious importance in the form of a Amrit Kund (Spring of Nectar). But the site seems to have lost its eminence under the sway of the Buddhist movement, which swept away most of the important Hindu holy places. According to popular belief – Valmiki wrote his celebrated epic, the Ramayana, near around this hallowed site of the "Pool of Nectar". It was here, too, that Sita stayed during the period of her vanavasa (banishment). Here again, the twin sons of Lord Rama, were taught the Ramayana. Yet another legend identifies the site of this pool with the place where the whole of Lord Rama's army was destroyed by his sons, Lava and Kusa, and relates how at that time a jug of nectar descended from heaven to restore the soldiers to life.

Valmiki's ashram, it is said, lay within a short distance of the renowned "Pool of Nectar". In Valmiki's time, the area was a thick forest. There were around Valmiki's ashram some more tanks with historical associations. One such hexagonal tank, Ram Tirth, is at a distance of around 1.1 kilometres from Amritsar; the others are Ramsar, Santokhsar, Ram Talai and Durgiana. Guru Ram Das must have known-the legendary importance of the place when he sanctified the pool of nectar in the sixteenth century.

The temple is surrounded by a pool of water, known as the Sarovar. There are four entrances to the temple, signifying the importance of acceptance and openness. Anyone who wants to enter the Golden Temple may do so, irrespective of religion, colour, creed or sex.

Ik Oankar

Ik Oankar means 'one' and is the term most frequently used by Sikhs about God. It stresses the unity or oneness of God, a distinctive feature of Sikh belief in an Indian society dominated by Hinduism in which God is traditionally manifested in a multitude of forms. It is found at the beginning of the Mul Mantra, the statement of belief which sums up the core of Sikh theology and which can be traced back to Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
The Ik Oankar comes from the Mool Mantar:
"There is only one God
Truth is his name
He is the creator
He is without fear
He is without hate
He is timeless and without form
He is beyond death, the enlightned one
He can be known by the Guru's grace

Tabla

The tabla developed as a hybridized drum, influenced by all of these varieties, in particular, the mrdangm and the puskara. Muktesvara temple (6th-7th century) and Bhuranesvara (and three other cave temples) of Badari in Bombay (6th century) contain depictions of the Puskara. Musicians often placed the puskara's smaller verticle drum (called 'alinga'), on their lap and played more than one drum at a time. Given the the design, technology, and musical structure for drums common in this this period, we can piece together numerious features of the tabla.
The name 'tabla', probably derived from the Arabic word for a drum (generic), called the 'tabl'; and possibly to some extent the Turkish word 'dawal'. Another popular notion is that Amir Khursuro invented the tabla by splitting the Pakawaj into two drums. This is highly disputed. Abul Fazil, the court recorder neither mentions nor describes the tabla, leaving doubt that Amir Khursuro invented the tabla, contrary to a previously popular notion. The Muslim invaders undoubtedly influenced the culture and structure of the tabla. However, the earliest depictions and literature describing the tabla as we recognize it today come from the 18th century.
Details available from this point on enable us to chart the development to modern day. Over the last two centuries the tabla begins to take the forefront of percussion instruments in north Indian classical music. We can trace the family lineage of the gharanas from the 18th century onward. Over this time, the tabla slowly changed, the dayan decreasing in size while the bayan increased. During this time the instrument slowly became the primary drum for both classical and popular music of north India.
