Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaaj Pt 1 of 2...

(By my Brother)

This year has a very special Anniversary for Sikhs, on the 20th October (we think), it will be the 300th Anniversary of the Guru Gadi of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaaj. Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaaj is the expanded version of Sri Adi Granth and installed as the forever living Guru of Sikhs in 1708 by Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaaj.

These pictures show Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaaj in their original form. If you look closely, you can see all the Gurbani is linked together, and not separated. It takes a dedicated, trained person to read the Gurbani in this form.

These Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaajs are all handwritten. It takes a dedicated, greatly skilled person to write the Gurbani. Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaajs are printed at Gurudwara Ramsar in Amritsar. These pictures were taken at the Smagam in Nairobi, Africa Decemeber 2007.

‘Kericho Wagon Works’ Pt 1 of 2

(By my Brother)
"Sant Baba Puran Singh Ji placed strong emphasis on the Sikh principle of 'gristi jeevan', living the life of a householder, will all its responsibilities to the family and society, rather than choosing a reclusive life of meditation. Sant Baba Puran Singh Ji emigrated to Kenya in 1916 and spent a total of forty-seven years in Kericho itself, where Baba Ji set up ‘Kericho Wagon Works’. There Baba Ji focussed on earning a livelihood, being a father to his family and helping others in the town, notably through municipal improvement schemes, such as the renovation of hospitals, schools and churches. In recognition of Baba Ji civic contributions, the town square was named Sant Puran Singh Square.

The spacious and monumental Gurudwara, which has become a stunning architectural landmark in the region, envelopes Baba Puran Singh Ji’s modest family residence as well as workshop – the ‘Kericho Wagon Works’ – which is still operating 79 years on since it was founded in 1925. The site has been gazetted by the Government of Kenya as a place of spiritual significance."

My Birth... (Poem, Part 2 of 2)

(By our Bhabi Ji, Raminder Kaur Ji)

Guru Ji saw the need for Sikhs to have a special Identity.
A way to distinguish them from other faiths.
Guru Ji gave Sikhs five Symbols:
Kesh, Kanghaa, Kirpan, Karrhaa and Kacheraa.
Each Symbol would help Sikhs,
help them to have a disciplined life style,
help them to always remember God.
Each male was given the title Singh.
Each female was given the title Kaur.
This was to help create equality among Sikhs.

I was humbled recalling the details of this historical event.
It made me even more pround to call myself a Sikh.
Without Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji,
I could not call myself Raminder Kaur.

I feel different now.
I feel part of a new family.
When I walk down the Street I present myself with more Pride.
I am more aware and conscious of my actions.
I feel inner peace.
I have been given strength to make it through life's quest,
My quest to reach God.

Most people cannot recall their birth,
I remember it as if it just happened yesterday...
