The Lord's Name does not abide within their hearts - their mothers should have been sterile.

...An unborn child in the womb is at one with the Lord. At birth, the spirit of the child is subjected and exposed to Maya. The child cries at losing the blissful union it had with the Lord. Shortly after birth, the child is taken into the presence of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaaj for its first spiritually significant ceremony, to invoke the Lord's blessings and to be named. A supplication on behalf of the child is made. After seeking blessings for good health as well as a long and purposeful spiritual life, a random reading is taken from Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaaj. The first letter of the first word of the hymn is selected as the first letter of the child's name. The name given to a Sikh child should be meaningful so as to constantly remind him/her of the Lord. These initial blessings lay the foundation for its subsequent spiritual life. The life of the young child should revolve around and forever seek blessings of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaaj, the eternal Guru.

The spiritual state of the parents is an important influence on the child...

Gurbani is the Light to illuminate this world; by His Grace, it comes to abide within the mind. ||1||

By doing good deeds, the Gurus word, which is the light (Knowledge) of the creation, is absorbed into our minds. Learning to read the Scripture is regarded as one of the most important activites, as is learning to play musical instruments - music is food for the soul. It is for this reason that kirtan should be performed and listened to every day in life.

The Sikh faith respects all religions and opens a healthy dialogue with other faiths. A Sikh is required to study all religions in their true spirit. The search for truth and sevice for humanity should bring religions and all people closer to each other and weld them into a world family.
