UCL Sikh Society's Guru Ka Langar Event - 27th Nov 2008

(By my Brother)

Below are some photos from the 2nd UCL Sikh Society's Guru Ka Langar Event (27th Nov 2008). It was a great programme, alot of people came to have Guru Ka Langar, over 2000 I think, which was great! The Langar was kindly made at a Gurudwara in Southall and drop off at the University in the morning. The programme involved many hours of organisation, a big well done to the organisers and everyone who made this event great! :)

There was an exhibition...

The exhibition was on Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Langar...

The pic above tells the story of when Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaaj was young and his father gave him some money, and told him to earn a profit. Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaaj took the money and brought and served food for some holy men he had met, who hadnt eaten for days. Here Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaaj earned a "true profit".

Balwand says that Khivi, the Guru's wife, is a noble woman, who gives soothing, leafy shade to all.

This was where the sangat took off their shoes.

Mohanpal Singh explaining some points about Langar to the sangat.

Where people could wash their hands...

When the Sangat partakes of Langar, their heads must be covered. Heres a Sevadaar putting on a Ramala to cover someone's head.

The Langar Hall...

The sangat was very happy to get some Langar...

The Langar Hall was full of sangat!

Some more Sangat.

The Langar was so tasty! The Langar was all food that is served normally in a Gurudwara...

Some of the Sevadaars.

Heres where all the used plates etc went.

The people who came loved the Langar.

When there is an event like this there are always questions that people asked, its great that people want to learn about Sikhi...

Aman Kaur...

There was a projector showing many aspects of Sikhism...

The Langar justed finished at the end of the programme, always great when all the langar was eaten...

Tabla Solo by Bhai Sukhvinder Singh "Pinky", Part 2 of 5.

Information from Chakardar...

"Padmashree, Pandit Kishan Maharaj was one of the greatest tabla players of our time. Born in the holy city of Varanasi in 1923, his dramatic career dominated the tabla scene for the second half of the twentieth century.
Pt Kishan Maharaj's ancestry boasts many professionals musicians including his father Pt Hari Maharaj and his uncle Pt Kanthe Maharaj, under whose tutelage he flourished into a great maestro. Pt Kanthe Maharaj was a disciple of Pt. Baldeo Sahai who was the son of Pt. Bhairav Sahai, the son of Pt. Ram Sahai, the founder of the great Benaras Gharana (tabla Style).

Pt. Kishan Maharaj's ability to play cross rhythms and produce complex calculations, particularly in tihai patterns made him one of the most respected and popular tabla players of his time. He had an immense versatilty with regard to playing any kind of accompaniment, be it with the sitar, Sarod, Dhrupad, Dhamar or dance. He played a distinctively dramatic and dynamic style which raised the profile of tabla playing to a new hiatus.

Sukhvinder Singh Naamdhari is one of the best tabla players from the Benaras Gharana and suitably emulates his Guru's style. He received his initial training in saath from Ustad Nihal Singh Ji, and went to Varanasi (Banaras) where for several years he received intensive training and guidance from none other than the legendary Pt. Kishen Maharaj, the best known and internationally acclaimed exponent of the Benaras Gharana of tabla playing.
Sukhvinder is a shining star in the world of tabla accompaniment and tabla solo playing. He had performed with most of the leading artistes, such as Pt. Ravi Shankar, Ustad Vilayat Khan, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Ustad Shahid Parvez (Sitar), Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, Pt. Rajan & Pt. Sajan Misra, Pt. Jasraj to name a few.

Ilyas Khan is a highly regarded sarangi artist who has perfected the art of nagma accompaniment. He is also an accomplished sarangi soloist and has performed throughtout the world with many great artists such as Ustad Faiyaz Khan, Ustad Tari Khan & Ustad Zakir Hussain."

New Bhai Sahib Bhai Bahadur Singh Ji Kirtan Videos - Part 2 of 3...

(By my Brother)

We have uploaded some new Kirtan videos of Bhai Sahib Bhai Bahadur Singh Ji (BSBBSJ). BSBBSJ was a student of Sant Sujaan Singh Ji, who was the head of the Nanaksar Samparda in Karol Bagh, Delhi. He was a world renowned Keertani and a very spiritually enlightened Gursikh. They both did Kirtan in Nanaksar Kaleran in the times of Sant Baba Nand Singh Ji (Founder Sant of Nanaksar Jatha). This is a very rare old video, so the video quality isnt the best. The kirtan was done in the United Kingdom in 1982 at the old Neville Road Gurudwara in East London. Accompaning BSBBSJ on the Vaja is his son, Bhai Gurmukh Singh Ji (New York) and on tabla his other son, Bhai Jit Singh Ji.

The Video below is a short Kirtan video.

The Shabad is:
